REGISTRATION NOW OPEN!

Are you a migrant woman and do you want to increase your chances in the competitive job market? AkiDwA’s Door to Work programme might be a good place to start. Door to Work III (January – June 2012) is now open for registration.

The programme offers migrant women an opportunity to gain invaluable experience, develop professional skills orestablish new contacts. Please note that only migrant women from EEA countries and those from non-EEA countries holding stamp 4 could be considered for the programme.

DTW III offers:

•          Education options exploration

•          CV & cover letter assistance

•          Work placement service

In order to participate, it is necessary for migrant women to register by filling in Registration Form. The forms and additional information are available on AkiDwA’s website: www.akidwa.ie/employment or from Zuzana at 01 834 9851 / zuzana@akidwa.ie .

The deadline for receiving applications for DTW III is 15th February 2012.

We would like to cordially invite you to attend AkiDwA’s 10^th Anniversary Fundraising and Recognition Dinner on the 23^rd of September 2011, to be held at the Gresham Hotel, O’Connell Street, Dublin 1. 

Akina Dada wa Africa (AkiDwA- Swahili for sisterhood), was established in August 2001 by a group of African women to address the needs of an expanding population of African and migrant women residing in Ireland. To mark our organisation’s achievements and the strength of the migrant women we have worked with over the years, and to recognise the crucial work that individuals and organisations have played in our success, we have planned a programme of activities, from the 12^th of September to the 23^rdSeptember 2011, across the country (full programme of activities attached). 

Our final event will be a fundraising and recognition dinner, on the 23^rd of September, at which those who have supported AkiDwA’s mission of promoting equality and justice for migrant women, will be acknowledged and awarded a certificate of recognition. 

Tickets for this evening event are €70 per person and €650 per table of ten. Each ticket enters the individual into a draw with prizes including a return flight for two to Mombasa, Kenya, a two-night B&B stay for two at the Gresham Hotel in Dublin or the Gresham Metropole in Cork and free Swahili lessons for beginners at the Dublin Swahili Institute.

This year’s Black Women in Europe™: Power List 2010 were chosen from nominations from the general public and editor Adrianne George and co-editor Mark Derek McCullough based on their achievements and sphere of influence. “When Michelle Obama was named the most powerful woman in the world this year I noticed that of the 6 other black women on the list none of them lived in Europe”, George explains. “I was inspired to create a list of our own”.

Women on the Black Women in Europe™: Power List include seasoned politicians, accomplished performers, and champion athletes as well as social entrepreneurs and rising stars in the business world. “This list will serve as a source of inspiration to black women everywhere”, George says. “In all arenas we are known to excel”.

The group – which has until now been inactive since 2005 – expressed its commitment to drawing attention to race inequalities in the UK and highlighted right-wing extremism, islamophobia, education and implementation of the Equality Act as possible areas of focus over the coming year.

Runnymede – the UK’s leading race equality think tank – will act as the secretariat of the group and has been working to re-establish the group since the start of the year.

Commenting, the group’s chair Diane Abbott said:

“I’m delighted that the All Party Parliamentary Group on Race and Community has been successfully reestablished. Too often the topic of race falls to the bottom of the political agenda, so going forward as a group we will work together to draw attention to race equality issues in the UK”.

During the past two years the Black European Women’s Council (BEWC) has held two strategic meetings; one in Holland and the second in Austria, toward its goal of establishing itself in the heart of the EU quarter in Brussels.

The BEWC also organized a conference in Brussels which was attended by EU politicians, leaders of organizations for women in the US and across Europe as well as diversity executives from corporate America and Europe.

This movement started at the historic 1st Black European Women’s Congress in Vienna in 2007.

Beatrice Acheleke, founder and leader of the Black European Women’s Council was honored at the 2009 World Diversity Leadership Summit this month in Washington, DC. Ms. Acheleke is a mother, executive director of AFRA, a non-profit, non governmental self-organisation and NGO of Black Women with headquarters in Vienna, Austria, and an inspiration to Black women everywhere.

Previous honorees include Vaclav Havel, former President of the Czech Republic and leader of the Czech Velvet Revolution against Communist Rule.

The World Diversity Leadership Summit conference is the world’s leading gathering of senior corporate executives, leading experts and policymakers focused on global and local diversity best practices. Conference partners included some of the largest and most respected companies and media outlets n the world.
